53° Amicable numbers. Two whole numbers, it will be recalled from Item 40°, are amicable if each is the sum of the proper divisors of the other. For example, 284 and 220, which constitute a pair that has been ascribed to Pythagoras, are amicable. This particular pair of numbers attained a mystical aura, and superstition maintained that two talismans bearing these numbers would seal perfect friendship between the wearers; should one of the wearers, though separated from the other by half the circumference of the earth, receive even so small an injury as a pin prick, the other would be aware of it. The numbers came to play an important role in magic, sorcery, astrology, and the casting of horoscopes.

Curiously enough, it seems that no new pair of amicable numbers was discovered until the great French number theorist Pierre de Fermat in 1636 announced 17,296 and 18,416 as another pair. Two years later the French mathematician and philosopher René Descartes gave a third pair. The Swiss mathematician Leonard Euler undertook a systematic search for amicable numbers and, in 1747, gave a list of thirty pairs, which he later extended to more than sixty.

A second curiosity in the history of these numbers was the late discovery, by the sixteen-year-old Italian boy Nicolo Paganini in 1866, of the overlooked and relatively small pair of amicable numbers, 1184 and 1210. Today more than nine hundred pairs of amicable numbers are known. These pairs are all of the same parity; that is, the two numbers of a pair are either both odd or both even. All the odd ones are multiples of 3; all the even pairs have the sum of their digits a multiple of 9.

A cyclic sequence of three or more numbers such that the sum of the proper divisors of each is equal to the next in the sequence is known as a sociable chain of numbers. Only two sociable chains are known. In 1918 the Frenchman P. Poulet found one of five "links":

12,496 14,288 15,472 14,536 14,264

There is a twenty-eight-link chain starting with 14,316. A sociable chain of exactly three links has been called a crowd; no crowds have yet been found.

This pair attained a mystical aura, and superstition maintained that two talismans would seal perfect friendship.

- that two talismans ... would seal perfect friendship 为宾语从句; - bearing these numbers 为现在分词短语,修饰 talismans; - should one of the wearers ... receive ... injury 为虚拟条件倒装句(= if one of the wearers should receive ...); - though separated from the other by half the circumference of the earth 为让步状语; - as a pin prick 为比较结构,说明伤害之小。

  • 定义句清晰严谨,使用 if each is the sum of ... 的数学表达;
  • 历史叙述按时间顺序展开,使用过去时;
  • should ... would ... 虚拟倒装表达夸张假设;
