41° The marriage of Pythagoras. More than one teacher has married a young and admiring pupil. Pythagoras may have been the first to do this. According to the story, among Pythagoras's favorite pupils was Theano, the beautiful young daughter of his host Milo. Theano developed a hopeless infatuation for her teacher, who was so deeply submerged in his studies that he noticed nothing. So he was greatly surprised one day when Theano informed him that she was about to expire of an unreciprocated passion for someone. On persistent questioning by the master, Theano finally admitted that Pythagoras himself was the man she loved. To save her sanity, if not her life, Pythagoras sacrificed his asceticism and married her.
