32° Thales, the engineer. Thales was a resourceful man and has been credited with a now doubted spectacular feat in engineering. King Croesus, who was an admirer and probably one-time patron of Thales, had urgent need to transport his army across the river Halys. Boats were out of the question, pontoon bridges were still a thing of the future, and there was no time to build a permanent bridge. To resolve his predicament, Croesus consulted Thales. The wise man quickly saw a solution. He directed that a canal be excavated to divert the river into a temporary channel. After the army had passed dryshod over the former river bed, Thales had everything restored to its former order, so as not to offend the river gods that Croesus respected.

King Croesus, who was an admirer and probably one-time patron of Thales, had urgent need to transport his army across the river Halys.

King Croesus had urgent need to transport his army across the river Halys.

- who was an admirer and probably one-time patron of Thales 为非限制性定语从句,补充说明 Croesus 与泰勒斯的关系; - to transport his army across the river Halys 为不定式短语,说明 need 的内容。

  • 使用正式动词和名词(如 credited, spectacular feat, predicament, excavated, divert),体现历史叙事的庄重感;
