有些古代中国数学家精于珠算和算筹。有故事说，公元 560 年左右，在晋阳学馆，一个西域来的和尚对数学家兼冶金家怀文的计算本领佩服无比。和尚指着院子里的一棵枣树，请他算算树上的枣子有多少。他拿出算子，顷刻间就报出了结果，不但说了树上共有多少颗枣儿，还清了多少熟的，多少生的，多少半生半熟的。为了检验他的结果，和尚把枣儿都打下来，一颗颗数。他发现数学家多算了一颗。“不可能，”怀文说，“把树再摇摇看。”果然，树上又落下一颗。

22° Huai-Wen calculates the dates on a tree. Some of the early Chinese mathematicians became quite adept with the abacus and the calculating rods. There is a story that at the college at Chinyang, sometime around the year 560, a foreign Buddhist monk exclaimed over the calculating ability of the mathematician and metallurgist Huai-Wen. Pointing to a jujube tree in the courtyard of the college, the monk asked Huai-Wen to calculate the number of dates on the tree. With the aid of his calculating device, Huai-Wen soon stated not only the total number of dates on the tree, but also how many were ripe, how many unripe, and how many only partly ripe. When, to test Huai-Wen's results, the dates were collected and counted, it was found that the mathematician was one date short. "It cannot be," said Huai-Wen, "shake the tree once more." And sure enough, one more date fell to the ground.
