16° Squaring the circle. The earliest attempted solution that has come down to us of the problem of constructing a square equal in area to a given circle is found in the Rhind papyrus of about 1650 B.C. There we are told that the area of a circle is equal to that of the square having 8/9ths of the diameter of the circle as a side. It is an elementary matter to show that this solution of the problem is equivalent to taking π = (4/3)⁴ or, approximately, 3.16.

One naturally wonders how the Egyptians arrived at the above approximate solution of the circle-squaring problem. In all likelihood, it was obtained by some sort of empirical procedure similar to the following: Draw a large circle on flat ground and cover its interior tightly with a large number of small pebbles, and only one pebble high, chosen as uniform in shape and size as possible. After this is done, convert the collection of pebbles from their circular array into a square array. On measuring the side of the square one will find it to be very close to 8/9ths of the diameter of the original circle.
